Provenance
Provenance:Ann Comninel, New York, gift from the Artist, 1965Private Collection, acquired from the above, 1989Thence by descent to the present ownerLot note:Pietro Annigoni was an Italian portrait and fresco painter who achieved fame after painting Queen Elizabeth II in 1956, as well as her husband Prince Philip; American Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson; and Pope John XXIII. Ann Comninel met the artist through her employer Stavros Livanos, a Greek shipping magnate, for whom she worked for many years in New York City. At the request of her employer, Comninel assisted Annigoni with art exhibits and sale prospects in the United States. The present work was gift from the artist to Ann for her assistance with his travels, shows, and tax matters in the early 1960s. In a letter dated September 12th, 1965, Annigoni wrote to her in a letter that, "This is one of the studies for a large painting-a religious painting. Do accept it please, with all my thanks."
